Understanding the condition

The menisci are cartilage structures that cushion the knee. Tears can happen with a twisting injury or as tissue changes over time. Symptoms and treatment needs differ from person to person.

Symptoms to discuss

  • Pain along the knee joint
  • Swelling or stiffness
  • Catching, locking, or difficulty straightening

These symptoms can have more than one cause. They do not confirm a diagnosis.

How treatment is approached

Not every tear requires surgery. The location and pattern of the tear, your symptoms, and other knee changes all matter. Care may involve rehabilitation and other non-surgical measures. When needed, an arthroscopic procedure may repair or remove damaged tissue.

Your visit with Dr. Carlson

Tell us when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life. Bring any X-rays, MRIs, or other imaging you already have, any written reports, and a list of treatments you have already tried. Imaging may be done during your first appointment if needed.

Dr. Carlson can discuss the examination findings, whether additional studies may be helpful, and a care plan that reflects your goals. Call 801-640-0000 to confirm scheduling and your Ridgeline appointment location.
