Understanding the condition
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that helps lift and rotate your arm. A tear can develop after an injury or gradually with wear. Symptoms vary; some tears cause little pain.
Symptoms to discuss
- Pain with overhead movement
- Shoulder weakness when lifting or rotating
- Pain at night, especially on the affected side
These symptoms can have more than one cause. They do not confirm a diagnosis.
How treatment is approached
Treatment depends on the type of tear, symptoms, and activity goals. Physical therapy and other non-surgical approaches may improve pain and function. Surgical repair may be considered for selected patients, particularly with ongoing weakness or certain injuries.
